Lot 201
THOMAS SHERLOCK HODGSON
Provenance:
Private Collection, Ontario.
Exhibited:
Seventh Annual Exhibition, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Ontario, 1955.
Note:
Tom Hodgson joined the Painters Eleven group at its founding in 1953. His “Non Objective” (1955) is alive with rich colour, bold shapes and lines which seem to enter into the space of the viewer. The artist’s meticulous blending of grey and cream-coloured pigments creates a background from which the marvelous shapes and lines emerge. In 1955, Hodgson would abandon masonite in favour of painting upon large canvases, similar in size to those artworks he saw while participating in the Carnegie International Exhibition of Contemporary Paintings at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh.
