Note:

Angela Leach’s “A.R. Shape #11” is a vibrant example of how the elements of line and colour are manipulated to alter viewer perception. Inspired by the Op art movement of the 1960s and quite certainly by her early work as a weaver and work in textile design, Leach applied her 32-colour palette to a shaped structure with vertical bands of alternating colour running the length of the form and tapering in width at varying points. Subtle value changes within each arcing line of warm and cool colours accentuate the optical effects of depth and movement resulting in the illusion of rippling fabric; the flat surface plane appears three-dimensional. Summarizing Leach’s “Abstract Repeat” series in “Abstract Painting in Canada,” Roald Nasgaard said, “[Leach’s] small abstract paintings dazzlingly juxtapose stripes of patterns of colour, closely packed and often sporting themselves in distorted, undulating waves that dizzyingly flow in and out of pictorial space, performing spatial swoops.”
