Note:
Denis Juneau was a famous second generation Plasticien artist. Originating in Montreal as a response to Les Automatistes, the movement was interested in non-figurative painting. Juneau worked primarily as an abstract painter, experimenting with geometric shapes and bright colors, and as a sculptor, employing metals after taking an interest in goldsmithing. “I try to illustrate movement in the world, of nuclear movement, the perpetual movement in space, the invisible vibration of sound, the movement of the beat of our hearts,” he explained.
Juneau attended L’Ecole des beaux arts de Montréal and travelled abroad to Centro Studi Arte di Industria in Novara, Italy. His work is held in the collection of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, National Gallery of Canada, and the Musee national des beaux-arts du Quebec. He was the recipient the Gershon Iskowitz Prize in 1986 and became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1973.
