Large Silk Embroidered ‘Birds of Paradise’ Panel and Massive Rosewood and Mother-of-Pearl Inlay Floor Screen, 19th Century
The central scene finely embroidered with ‘birds of paradise’ including peacocks, quails, swallows, sparrows, and a crane in a verdant garden scene surrounded by butterflies, blossoming peonies, and branches of prunus flowers. The textile in a rectangular rosewood frame elaborately carved in openwork with ‘100 antiques’, and inlaid with mother-of-pearl floral designs of prunus, double gourds, and bamboo, the frame further embellished with four individual ivory panels affectionately rendered with scenes depicting a mother and children, the whole supported on a massive stand with reticulated vines of scrolling flora interspersed with auspicious objects such as peaches, flower, ruyi, bats, deer, and cranes along all sides, and together with a battle scene near the base supported by recumbent fu-lions
